Brookside Blast 9/16/22

As we bring the first five day week to a close, there has been chatter among parents (and by parents, we mean Mr. Neville and Ms. Schoolcraft) about "getting out the door in the morning." This story from The Good News Network tickled our funny bones as very relatable - you can catch the story here and a two minute clip of "mama bear" getting her cubs across the busy road! Thank YOU all for getting your cubs across the road and to school on time each day. As a reminder, we have the back entrance open in the morning for drop-off.

Please note the changes in the Open House schedule (grades PK, K, 1, 2 have changed):

PE News

Next week is our Fall Biking and Scootering Week in PE as well as our Fall Walk and Bike to School.

For PE classes:

PreK and K will be scootering, in the gym only, next week. They may bring their own scooters and helmets if they would like. Scooters may be brought to the gym in the morning.

Grades 1-4 students may bring their own helmet, bike or scooter (3rd and 4th graders may also bring their own skateboard) on their PE day to use during PE class. BPS has plenty of bikes, scooters and helmets for students to use if they do not bring their own. Bikes and scooters should be dropped off in the morning on the grass near the chicken coop.

BPS Walk and Bike (Scooter) to School: Wednesday, September 21st

  • Meet at Rusty Parker Park from 7:00-7:20am for a light breakfast

  • Walk or bike to Brookside at 7:20am

Ricky Wysocki, Professional Disc Golf Player Visits Brookside Primary School

On Wednesday, September 14th, Ricky Wysocki visited Brookside Primary School to run a disc golf clinic with Mr. Costello's and Ms. Clymer's 4th grade classes during their PE class. Earlier this fall, Chuck Hughson of Waterbury Sports nominated BPS to receive free disc golf equipment through the Socki Bomb Foundation which is Ricky's foundation to promote and grow the sport of disc golf. BPS was surprised and excited to hear that not only were they chosen to receive the equipment, but they would also get to have Ricky come to the school to run a disc golf clinic with students. Brookside Primary School would like to thank the Socki Bomb Foundation and Ricky Wysocki for the wonderful afternoon of learning how to play disc golf and for the equipment to allow all BPS students to learn how to play. Ricky will be playing in a tournament at Smuggler's Notch this weekend. To learn more about Ricky and his foundation go to www.sockibombfoundation.com or on Instagram: @sockibombfoundation1

Nurses' Notes:

STAY UP TO DATE WITH YOUR VACCINES

You are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines when you have received all doses in the primary series and all boosters recommended for you, when eligible.

CDC recommends:

Flu Vaccines

The Vermont Department of Health recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu shot. Getting the flu shot helps protect you, your family and your community. The flu vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine can be given at the same visit. Your child's primary care provider can schedule a flu shot.

BPS Backpack Program

Brookside Primary School is again sponsoring, free of charge a “weekend of food” for your child program. We are able to offer a supply of nutritious meals and snacks for children over the weekends and extended breaks at no cost. Any child enrolled at Brookside Primary School is able to receive these weekly bags of food for themselves and each child in their family.

If you believe your child could benefit from this program, we strongly encourage you to fill out this form and return it to the main office, or send it back via email to mballard@huusd.org. Only one form is needed per family, but please be sure to include all the requested information around food tastes, allergies, etc. All information is kept confidential. Once your child is signed up, they will receive a backpack full of food each week. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this program for your children.

Questions or concerns? Please contact Michele Ballard, mballard@huusd.org or Bonnie Flanagan bflanagan@huusd.org.

Have a great weekend!
